China — Kashgar Region
Kashgar
Kashgar is the cultural capital of Chinese Central Asia — an Uyghur-majority city at the western tip of the Tarim Basin where the Pamir, Tian Shan and Karakoram meet. The Sunday Livestock Market is one of the largest in Asia, the old town's mud-brick alleys give onto the 15th-century Id Kah Mosque, and Apak Hoja Mausoleum's emerald tiles glow in the afternoon light. Reached by EcoNomad via the Torugart or Irkeshtam Pass from Kyrgyzstan.
