The trip

Combined Tour: Uzbekistan & Southern Kyrgyzstan

15 days of caravan cities, Kyzylkum desert and high-altitude nomadic plateaus — the Silk Road reimagined.

Description and highlights of the journey

Between culture and nature, this is a journey full of contrasts that awaits us during these two weeks. We first set off to discover the legendary lands of Central Asia, on the ancient Silk Road. The immensity of the steppe inspired the wild dreams of empire-builders as flamboyant as they were ephemeral — Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, Tamerlane. Azure mosque domes, gold, spices and silk: these words evoke the jewels of Central Asia — Khiva, the pearl of the Karakum desert, Bukhara, a major crossroads of Islamic civilisation, and Samarkand, the city of the Thousand and One Nights. Between mountains, steppes and open deserts, from mosques to mausoleums, the riches of these oasis-cities will reveal themselves to us.

We then take the train to Tashkent, our gateway out of Uzbekistan. A short flight brings us to Kyrgyzstan and a dramatic change of scenery, into the fertile Fergana Valley and onward to the high Tian Shan. We finish in Bishkek and Ala-Archa National Park.
